(June 18, 2012) – The State Highway Administration (SHA) is paving one and one-half miles of eastbound US 50 (Ocean Gateway) from Rockawalkin Road to the western end of the Salisbury Bypass in Wicomico County.  The overlay project begins tomorrow and is scheduled to be complete by late June, weather permitting.

SHA selected American Paving, Inc., of Eden as the contractor for the $500,000 resurfacing project.  Crews will close a single lane as needed Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Due to heavy summer traffic on US 50, SHA will not allow work on Fridays.  SHA will use cones and an arrow panel to direct drivers through temporary single-lane closures during the resurfacing work.  Additionally, crews will paint or install new lane markings along the newly paved portion of the highway.

More than 40,000 vehicles travel this section of US 50 each day, with that average increasing during the summer. This work is part of a series of resurfacing projects that SHA is managing in the shore region to improve safety and prolong the “life” of pavement surfaces.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones For Everyone.
