(June 21, 2012) – This weekend, the State Highway Administration (SHA) continues a project to improve the ride quality for thousands of motorists on the US 1 (Conowingo Road) bridge over the Susquehanna River (Conowingo Dam).  Beginning Friday, June 22 at 6 p.m., SHA will close the southbound lane on the bridge and direct two-way traffic  using a flagging operation on the northbound lane.  Weather permitting, all lanes will open by 6 p.m., Sunday, June 24.

The weekend work allows crews to resurface the southbound lanes on the deck (riding surface) of the bridge.  SHA completed resurfacing the northbound lanes on the bridge in mid-June.  This weekend’s resurfacing will complete the resurfacing project.

Work crews will use flagging operations, portable message signs, and cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.  Although SHA will not close the bridge completely, significant delays are expected.  SHA encourages motorists to use alternate routes such as I-95 (John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway) or US 40 (Pulaski Highway).

In the event of rainfall, SHA will postpone the work until next weekend.  PDI Sheetz of Linthicum Heights is the contractor for the $1.2 million project..  Weather permitting, the weekend work will complete the resurfacing project on US 1 over the Conowingo Dam.

Drivers need to plan ahead for extra travel time and stay alert for this temporary change in traffic patterns. Slow down and look ahead for slow or stopped vehicles when approaching the lane closures on the Conowingo Dam Bridge. Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone!
