WHAT:
The West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, in cooperation with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Hagerstown/Eastern Panhandle Metropolitan Planning Organization, will hold an informational public workshop concerning the recurring congestion and mobility challenges along the US 340 corridor near Harpers Ferry.

WHERE:
Bolivar Community Center, 60 Panama Street, Bolivar, WV
WHY:
This will be a planning-level workshop through which officials will seek public input regarding operational improvements within and adjacent to the US 340 corridor from MD 67 in Washington County, Maryland to Washington Street in West Virginia. The highway narrows from four lanes to two as it crosses the Potomac River from Maryland into Virginia.
Potential improvements to be evaluated include, but are not limited to: traffic signal changes, carpooling, park-and-ride locations and transit opportunities. Displays will be available identifying the area of interest and purpose of the study, and representatives from each state will be available.
“Our goal is to work with West Virginia and Virginia to do what we can to improve safety and traffic flow and alleviate the backups that affect drivers not only on US 340, but throughout this South County area,” said Maryland SHA District Engineer Anthony Crawford.
The area was previously the subject of an April 13 public meeting at Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Knoxville, Md., organized by Maryland State Del. Neil Parrott.
