(April 2, 2013) – On Monday, April 8, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a seven mile project to improve the ride quality for thousands of motorists in Berlin, Worcester County.  SHA will resurface westbound US 50 (Ocean Gateway) between Main Street (MD 818) and the Wicomico County line (Pocomoke River). Weather permitting; motorists will be riding on a new road surface by early summer.

“SHA has been resurfacing US 50 in large sections over the past several years to provide a smoother and safer commute to thousands of motorists,” said Donnie Drewer, SHA District Engineer.  “We urge patience as crews will be working hard to complete this project as soon as possible. For everyone’s safety, please pay extra attention when approaching the work zone and be sure to slow down – there is no room for driver error in roadway work zones.”

In addition to resurfacing westbound US 50, SHA will patch damaged sections of pavement and restripe the highway. SHA awarded the $2.5 million project to American Infrastructure of Fallston. The last time this section of westbound US 50 was resurfaced was summer 1996.

Drivers can expect single lane closures along westbound US 50 in the project area Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. SHA will use cones, barrels and electronic signs to guide motorists through the work zone. A daily average of more than 14,500 motorists travel along westbound US 50 between Berlin and Whaleyville. Motorists can explore the Cape to Cape Byway along MD 346 (Old Ocean City Road) as an alternate to US 50.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
