UPDATE  (June 7) - SHA will close the ramp beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, June 8 at 5 a.m.  Ramp will re-open by 5 a.m. Monday, June 10.

(May 29, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is reconstructing the ramp from eastbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway, Outer Loop) to southbound MD 170 (Camp Meade Road) beginning this weekend in Linthicum.  The ramp will be closed to traffic from 11 p.m. Friday, May 31 through 5 a.m. Monday, June 3.

Using a special polyester-epoxy modified concrete, SHA hopes to accomplish in one weekend work that would normally take several weeks using conventional materials and closures.  If the work is postponed or requires additional time, the same closure may be needed the weekend of June 7-10.

Work includes milling the old asphalt riding surface, blast cleaning and applying new, modified concrete overlay.

A two-mile detour will be in place during the closure.  Motorists should continue past the MD 170 south exit and take MD 170 north to MD 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.), turn right on MD 648 and proceed to MD 169 (Maple Road). Turn right on MD 169 and continue to MD 170.  Detour signs will be posted.

“By using a modified concrete product instead of asphalt we’re ensuring long term cost savings and extending the service life of the riding surface and the ramp by 20 years,” explains Greg Roby, Deputy Director for Inspection and Remedial Engineering in the Office of Structures.  “With just one or two weekend closures, we’ll save motorists the headaches of having a prolonged work zone on this ramp.”

SHA’s contractor for the $500,000 project is PDI Sheetz of Linthicum.

As crews strive to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
