(May 31, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) expects to have a replacement traffic signal installed and operational by Saturday afternoon at the intersection of MD 140 and Sullivan Road in Carroll County, where a vehicle struck a signal pole last weekend.  Work is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., weather permitting.

Left turns have been prohibited at the intersection since early Monday. For safety reasons, the pole and its concrete foundation had to be replaced. Crews poured the new foundation on Wednesday and have been allowing the new concrete to cure.

Until the new signal is activated, the median of MD 140 will remain closed to cross-traffic at the Sullivan Road intersection. Drivers on MD 140 may turn only right at Sullivan Road, and drivers on Sullivan Road may only turn right onto MD 140. The remaining traffic signals are set to flashing yellow for traffic on MD 140 and flashing red for traffic on Sullivan Road.

Eastbound traffic on MD 140 may make a U-Turn at Englar Road to access Sullivan Road north of MD 140. Westbound traffic on MD 140 may take the exit for MD 97 North and bear left at the fork, then turn left onto Pennsylvania Avenue to reach the Sullivan Road area south of MD 140. Another option for westbound traffic is to turn left at Englar Road, then right on Monroe Street. Drivers should exercise caution and allow extra travel time in the area.

As crews strive to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
