(July 15, 2013) – Travelers in Cumberland should anticipate lane closures and flagging operations along MD 639 (Willowbrook Road and Messick Road) over the next month due to paving operations.  The State Highway Administration (SHA)’s contractor will begin work this Sunday evening, July 21, and continue through mid-to-late August according to the following schedule:

• Week of July 21: Night work on Willowbrook Road near the I-68 interchange and near Western Maryland Health System starting at 6 p.m. July 21 to 6 a.m. July 22, then 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.
• July 29-late August: Day work on Messick Road north of MD 51 (Industrial Boulevard) between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

The work is weather-permitting and includes grinding (removing the top layer of pavement), patching, and paving. It will be completed under SHA’s areawide paving contract. SHA will use signs, cones, barrels and flaggers to guide motorists through the work zone. Customers with questions about traffic operations on MD 639 or other State numbered routes in Allegany County may contact SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400, or toll-free at 800-760-7138.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
