WHAT:

Media opportunity for interviews and photos as elementary school students are introduced to local history at 17 East Main Street. Alongside archaeologists, children will learn about local history, see current finds, screen dirt and learn how archaeologists scientifically collect information to reconstruct the lives of people who lived more than 200 years ago.

WHEN:

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24th
(Additional scheduling available throughout week)

WHERE:

17 East Main Street, New Market, Frederick County

WHY:

If you walked along New Market’s Main Street two hundred years ago, you might see travelers passing through on their way to buy and sell goods in Frederick and Baltimore.  You could also find wagons filled with pioneers making their way west.  Oftentimes, these travelers would stop at Taverns for rest and refreshments. SHA archaeologists are learning more about the people who lived in and visited Smith’s Tavern at 17 East Main Street and Schell’s Tavern at 32 West Main Street. Archaeologists hope to find evidence of the meals travelers ate, the status of the residents, and the use of the space around the tavern.  Archaeologists also want to learn how the open space next to the tavern was used – did children play here? Were animals housed here? Were there outbuildings, like smokehouses, privies, sheds or barns in this space?

PHOTO OP:
