(September 27, 2013) – Motorists should be prepared for left lane closures on both directions of I-68 at the bridge over Patterson Avenue, west of Cumberland, next week. The lane closures will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30 and continue around-the-clock through noon on Friday, October 4.

Motorists should be prepared for possible delays during peak travel times and use extra caution in the work zone.

The closures are necessary to allow crews to pour a new concrete deck (driving surface) for a portion of the I-68 bridge over Patterson Avenue. Traffic lanes are currently shifted to the outer edges of the bridge while crews reconstruct the center portion. The left lane closures are necessary to allow room for the equipment used in the deck pour.

The work is part of a $10 million project to rehabilitate the I-68 bridges over Kelly Boulevard and Patterson Avenue. Weather permitting, the project will be complete in fall 2014. SHA’s contractor for the project is Kokosing Construction Co., Inc. of South Charleston, W.Va. Click here for more information about the project.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
