(October 22, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) advises motorists that overnight detours are scheduled for traffic on US 220 (McMullen Highway/Greene Street) later this week due to construction at US 220 and I-68.

Weather permitting, the detours will be in place between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights October 23, 24 and 25. Wednesday night, only northbound US 220 traffic will be detoured. Thursday and Friday nights, both northbound and soutbound traffic will be detoured.

To accommodate truck traffic, the detour will direct motorists around the closure using MD 53 (Winchester Road) and I-68. Motorists familiar with the area may use local streets rather than the posted detour. In the event of inclement weather, the closure will be rescheduled.

The closures are related to construction of a new, partial roundabout nearing completion on US 220 at I-68. When complete, this will allow traffic heading south from Cumberland on Greene Street to access eastbound I-68. SHA’s contractor for the project is IA Construction Corporation of Cumberland. Those who have questions about traffic operations along US 220, I-68, or other state numbered routes in Allegany County may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
