(December 6, 2013) – Left turns and crossover traffic will be prohibited at the intersection of MD 140 and Sullivan Road in Carroll County for several days as the State Highway Administration (SHA) replaces a traffic signal pole that was struck earlier this week.

For safety reasons, the pole must be removed and the intersection crossover will be closed until a replacement signal pole and foundation can be installed.

Eastbound traffic on MD 140 may make a U-Turn at Englar Road to access Sullivan Road north of MD 140. Westbound traffic on MD 140 may take the exit for MD 97 North and bear left at the fork, and then turn left onto Pennsylvania Avenue to reach the Sullivan Road area south of MD 140. Another option for westbound traffic is to turn left at Englar Road, then right on Monroe Street. Drivers should exercise caution and allow extra travel time in the area.

This is the second time this year the pole has been struck and replaced. A similar incident occurred in late May.

“In the interest of reopening the intersection as quickly as possible, we will replace the pole in the same location for now, but our engineers are evaluating the possibility of redesigning the traffic signal to relocate the pole away from the median in hopes of reducing the chances of it being struck again,” SHA District Engineer Dave Coyne said.

As crews strive to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
