(December 6, 2013) – Beginning at midnight tonight, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin two weekends of round the clock lane closures, on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) from Contee Road to Muirkirk Road, weather permitting. These weekend lane closures are necessary due to the length of time required to close the lane and perform concrete patch work on US 1. This work is part of the last segment of the Intercounty Connector (ICC) project.

SHA will close the right lane of traffic on southbound US 1, tonight at midnight, from Contee Road to Muirkirk Road, weather permitting. Crews will excavate the roadway surface, pour concrete, and pave into Sunday morning. The right lane will reopen to traffic by noon on Sunday. Beginning on Friday, December 13, the left lane on southbound US 1 will be closed at 3 p.m., from Contee Road to Muirkirk Road. The left lane on northbound US 1 will also be closed beginning at 6 p.m. for the same type of repair work. Both left lanes will reopen by noon on Sunday, December 15.

SHA does not expect motorists to experience any delays. Variable message signs, cones, and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds and be attentive to help prevent accidents, as they drive through the work zone. For more information about the project, please call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
