(January 6, 2014) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is closely monitoring a strong cold front that is forecasted to bring extremely cold weather to the State.  Rain could freeze on roadways, and combined with dense fog, create potentially dangerous driving conditions.

“The greatest impact to motorists will be slick or even icy conditions on what appears to be just wet pavement – so staying alert and slowing down will be critical for your safety and others,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “Crews are on the highways and will closely monitor conditions along with the Emergency Operations Center in Hanover.”

Dense fog is hampering visibility throughout much of Maryland with fog warnings in effect for many regions.  SHA recommends slowing down and reminds motorists that high-beams do nothing in fog except reflect light back into the vehicle making driving hazardous.

High winds could also be a factor and instantly freeze moisture on trees and power wires. Motorists are urged to pay close attention to the road ahead and be prepared to alter routes and plans in the event of downed trees, large tree branches or wires.

Should motorists come upon an unlit traffic signal due to a power outage, State law requires ALL traffic to stop and treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

The latest traffic information is available by calling 5-1-1 from a hands-free device or logging onto www.md511.org and following SHA on Facebook and Twitter for road updates.
