(March 20, 2014) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is now starting construction on a $325,000 drainage and outfall enhancement project in the Town of Hampstead.

The project will relocate a drainage outfall pipe running under 1222 N. Main Street (MD 30 Business)  that partially collapsed under the building. The new pipe will run under the alley beside 1224 N. Main Street (Shipley’s Fine Jewelry).  Weather permitting, the project will be complete this summer.

The project is being completed in advance of a $20 million streetscape project scheduled to begin in 2016. The advance pipe relocation will address  drainage concerns in more immediate need of repair.

The alley beside 1224 N. Main St., which connects Main and West streets, will be closed for the duration of construction. In addition, during portions of the project, parking will be prohibited on the west side of Main Street in the project area. Sections of the sidewalk will also need to be closed temporarily, but access to business entrances will be maintained and the project team will make every effort to minimize impacts to the community.

SHA’s contractor for the drainage breakout project is CJ Miller, Inc. of Hampstead.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
