WHY:

SHA archaeologists, in partnership with the Alleghany County Civil War Roundtable, are conducting archaeological excavations around the mill ruin to learn if evidence of the mill complex and battle survive. In addition, SHA is scanning the mill ruin in 3D so that the structure can be virtually saved. This project provides a solid example of stewardship and preservation of a historic site that is significant not only to the local community, but to the nation.  SHA issues the reminder that using metal detector devices on State-owned property is illegal.
