(August 13, 2014) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) maintenance personnel are continuing to address weather – related lane closures along State routes.  Crews worked through the Tuesday evening rush hour, addressing closures due to standing or high water.

A section of MD 648 (Waterford Road) between Catherine Avenue and Old Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard remains closed due to a roadway washout at Old Mill Road.  Temporary traffic signs are in place to redirect traffic around the closure.

SHA engineers inspected the box culvert at Lake Waterford and have determined that soil under the bridge abutments washed away, creating a washout approximately 15-feet deep, 10-feet wide and 24-feet long across the entire roadway.  This afternoon, crews are pumping grout at each abutment to stabilize the box culvert, and then will fill and pave the roadway approaches. Weather permitting, the roadway will open by Thursday evening rush hour.

While most roads have been reopened in the past 24 hours, many roads that typically flood in low-lying areas will likely remain closed as rain stays in the forecast for at least a few more days.  In some cases, flooded roads may not yet have been reported so approach low-lying areas with extreme caution.
