(August 14, 2014) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is replacing deteriorating pipes along sections of two State roads in Worcester County.

These system preservation projects will reduce erosion along the roadside and will require a complete closure of the roadway for drainage improvements. Each location will require a roadway closure of approximately 100 feet.

Starting Monday, August 18 after 9 a.m., crews will replace one underground pipe under MD 346 (Old Ocean City Road) at Double Bridge Branch in Berlin. Crews will close MD 346 between Hall Road and just beyond Circle Road.  Drivers will be directed to use MD 610 (Whaleysville Road) and US 50 (Ocean Gateway).

On Monday, August 25, crews will replace two underground pipes under MD 568 (Hatchery Road) near Buntings Branch in Bishopville. Crews will close MD 568 at Cemetery Road.  Drivers will be directed to use Bishopville Road, Hudson Road and Lighthouse Road. Part of this detour route extends into Delaware, which shortens the length of the detour for drivers in the area.

SHA will also build new retaining walls at each end of the culvert and then pave the roadway approaches.  Together, the $647,000 improvements will be completed by David A. Bramble, Inc. of Chestertown by the end of August.

SHA appreciates the patience and cooperation of area residents and drivers, and reminds them to follow detour signs and remain alert for work crews.  Those who have questions about this project may contact the SHA District 1 Office at 410-677-4000 or toll-free at 1-800-825-4742. Traffic barriers, temporary traffic signs and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone.
