(September 11, 2014) – Beginning this weekend the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will resurface the southbound MD 2 (Solomons Island Road) approach to the MD 214 (Central Avenue) intersection in Edgewater, Anne Arundel County. SHA will remove the asphalt surface from the southbound MD 2 intersection approach to MD 214 and resurface with a special high-strength concrete known as “whitetopping.”

The concrete overlay will address rutting of the ride surface caused by heavy traffic, particularly commercial trucks, stopping and starting at the intersection. Each day an average of 42,000 vehicles travel through the intersection on MD 2 and 25,000 vehicles pass through the intersection using MD 214.

SHA’s contractor will work over the weekends, with completion expected by mid-October, weather permitting. SHA will close two southbound MD 2 lanes (including turn lanes) each weekend beginning at 9 p.m. Friday. Crews will reopen the lanes as soon as the concrete cures but no later than 5 a.m. Monday morning. While the concrete dries, motorists may not see activity; however, the lanes cannot be reopened until the material cures.

Drivers will be able to access the intersection, SHA strongly encourages everyone to plan ahead and use alternate routes including Pike Ridge Road (MD 214A) and MD 253 (Mayo Road).

SHA awarded the $477,000 contract to Concrete General of Gaithersburg. Customers with questions about this project may contact the District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603 or by email at shadistrict5@sha.state.md.us. While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
