(October 8, 2014) - Resurfacing is now underway as part of the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) $4.8 million safety and improvement project on MD 704 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Highway) in Seat Pleasant. Located between the District of Columbia city line and Hill Road, this phase of the 1.29-mile project should be complete by late fall.

Crews will remove the top layer of pavement within the project limits, apply new asphalt and apply permanent pavement markings. To perform the work, SHA may temporarily close one or two lanes in both directions of MD 704 overnight, Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

During resurfacing, crews will continue to work at various locations within the project limits and may temporarily close one or two lanes in both directions of MD 704, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Completed work includes significant portions of median, sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, inlets, electrical infrastructure and traffic signal construction.

Weather permitting, all phases of work should be complete late summer 2015. More than 26,000 vehicles use this heavily traveled section of MD 704 daily.

SHA crews will use electronic message boards, construction cones and barrels, arrow boards and flaggers to direct motorists. Pedestrians should remain alert for crews and equipment entering and exiting the work zone. At times, equipment may become noisy and disruptive.

SHA’s contractor for the work is Rustler Construction, Inc. of Upper Marlboro; construction began in summer 2013.
