(October 10, 2014) – On Wednesday, October 15, SHA will shift traffic on the Park Heights Avenue Bridge over I-695 by reducing travel lanes from four lanes to two.  Motorists will use one through lane in each direction, and a new temporary traffic signal will control left turns from northbound Park Heights Avenue to the outer loop of I-695. The two-lane traffic pattern on the bridge will be in effect for the duration of the $5.6 million project.

The Park Heights Avenue bridge over I-695 carries more than 8,300 vehicles per day and is in need of major repairs. The project work includes removing and replacing the riding surface, installing new concrete barriers, sidewalks and curbs on the bridge and replacing a steel beam damaged by over-height trucks traveling on I-695. Additional work includes installing new overhead bridge lights; rebuilding concrete support piers and abutments at each end of the bridge; cleaning and painting structural steel; and reconstructing the pavement on the approaches to the bridge.

Crews are allowed to implement temporary single daytime lane closures on I-695 beneath the Park Heights Avenue Bridge between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday.  Temporary night-time single and double lane closures on I-695 may  occur between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning Sunday – Thursday.

Pedestrians will be able to travel along one side of the Park Heights Avenue bridge at all times. Temporary, short-term ramp closures and detours may occur during various stages of construction.   All travelers should plan for extra travel time  on Park Heights Avenue, Stevenson Road and the Brooks Robinson Drive connector road.  The project is scheduled for completion late fall 2015.  SHA’s contractor is Martins Construction Corporation of Falls Church, VA.

Those who have questions about these projects may contact the SHA District Four Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2420, toll-free at 1-866-998-0367 or by e-mail at shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us.

SHA thanks everyone for driving safely through the work zone. As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
