More than Five Miles of Driving Surface Will Be Resurfaced on US 50

(December 14, 2015)  - The Maryland Department of Transportation’s  State Highway Administration (SHA) recently began a $10.3 million safety and resurfacing project on eastbound US 50 (John Hanson Highway) from just south of Lottsford Vista Road to the US 50/MD 301 interchange near the Anne Arundel County line in Bowie. This is a distance of five and one-half miles. Weather permitting; the project should be complete by late summer 2016. Preliminary project activity began last month, with most major construction scheduled to take place in spring and summer 2016.

To date, crews have completed roadway patching, which will continue through late spring (weather permitting). Crews may also replace and install new guardrail during the winter months as temperatures and weather allows. Project activity that will take place in 2016 includes:

• Resurfacing all traffic lanes;

• Resurfacing the ramps from eastbound US 50 to northbound and southbound MD 3 (Crain Highway), eastbound US 50 to Medford Boulevard and the ramp from northbound MD 3 to eastbound US 50;

• Installing new pavement markings;

• Constructing inlet tie-ins; and

• Cleaning inlets and pipes for improved highway drainage.

Crews are permitted to close a single lane of US 50, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and two lanes, overnight, Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. On weekends, crews may also close one or two lanes in both directions of US 50 up to 24 hours a day for roadway patching, which is dependent on temperatures. SHA’s contractor for the work is Allan Myers of Fallston. More than 145,000 vehicles use this section of road daily.

SHA has a similar project that will resurface westbound US 50 between prior to Lottsford Vista Road to the Anne Arundel County line.  The project should start spring 2016.
