Motorists Should Follow Detour Signs and Plan for Additional Travel Time

(April 28, 2016) – This Friday April 29, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close a portion of MD 144 (Main Street) in New Market, in Frederick County. Crews will begin work at 6 p.m. on Friday April 29, and continue through Monday May 2 at 5 a.m., weather permitting. The road will be closed between MD 75 and Prospect Road and is necessary to allow crews to remove the top layer of asphalt, lower the roadway and repave the road and driveway connections.

Although a portion of Main Street will be closed at New Market Community Park just east of Federal Street, access will be maintained to the park. During the closure, motorists will follow a signed detour:

• From west on Main Street toward New Market Middle and Elementary schools, take northbound MD 75 to a left on MD 874 (Old New Market Road) and back to Main Street.

• From east on Main Street, travel towards the city park, turn left onto MD 874 (Old New Market Road) to a right on MD 75, then access both I-70 and MD 144 (Main Street).

SHA’s work is east of the Cindy Alvarado on the Road Again 5k. The designated race route will not be impacted by the work that is being conducted. The work is part of the $8 million streetscape project being done by Concrete General Inc. of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

The project should be complete by winter 2017 and will improve mobility and safety in the town of New Market. Travelers should allow extra time to make their way around the detour. For the latest real-time travel information, log onto www.md511.org. A complete listing of current roadway projects is included in e-Road Ready 2016, the online brochure. Please slow down and stay alert as you encounter work zones; work zone safety is in your hands.
