Pipe near Rockawalkin Road Possibly Compromised in Heavy Rain; Minimum Several Days Closure Needed as Hydraulics Team Evaluates

(June 29, 2016) – A section of MD 349 (Nanticoke Road) is closed between Oliver Drive and Rockawalkin Road just west of Salisbury as the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) investigates possible drain pipe damage following Tuesday’s heavy rains.  The pipe connects Rockawalkin Creek with a pond on the north side of MD 349.

The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of motorists, residents and workers, as well as expedite the repair.  Engineers are evaluating the pipe and surrounding area, including a nearby earthen dam, to determine what repairs may be needed before the road can be reopened. The closure is expected to remain in place into August.

Motorists should use Rockawalkin Road and Levin Dashiell Road as detour routes.

SHA will provide updates through local media, internet and social media resources including our Twitter page, @MDSHA.  Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
