Motorists Should Slow Down and Stay Alert

(October 14, 2016) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will activate a new traffic signal at the intersection of MD 65 (Sharpsburg Pike) and Rockland Drive.  SHA is installing the signal to enhance safety and support the increased traffic in the area.

On Monday, SHA will place the new traffic signal on a three day “flash mode” to familiarize motorists with the new traffic pattern.  SHA will program the new traffic signal for full operation (red, yellow and green phases) on Thursday, October 20 at 10 a.m., weather permitting.

In addition to the new LED traffic signal, crews also installed a crosswalk and American with Disability Act (ADA) compliant ramps to assist pedestrians who wish to cross Rockland Drive. Approximately 10,000 motorists use this portion of MD 65 each day.

SHA awarded the $178,000 contract to Scott Duncan, Inc. of Harmans, MD.
