Drivers Should Plan for Additional Travel Time

(October 13, 2016) – Tonight, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will shift eastbound traffic on I-70 at the I-68 interchange as part of the ongoing bridge rehabilitation project.  Crews will create two, 11 foot-wide travel lanes on the right side of the bridge, with the work area on the left side separated by concrete barriers.

Weather permitting, the traffic switch for this last phase will take crews one evening to establish.  The traffic pattern will remain in place until the project is complete next summer.

SHA anticipates making the change October 13 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday, October 14.   Motorists travelling on eastbound I-68 will be detoured to MD 144 (Main Street) through Hancock.  Drivers on eastbound I-70 will encounter either the left or right lane closed.  The Maryland State Police will be onsite to assist with traffic control.

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration reminds drivers to adhere to the posted speed limits and remain alert while driving.  With the work occurring during the weekend, drivers should plan for extra travel time to reach their destinations.  Those who have questions about SHA projects in Washington County may call the SHA District 6 Office at 301-729-8400, toll-free at 1-800-760-7138 or send email to shadistrict6@sha.state.md.us.
