Traffic Will Be Detoured During Construction; Project Continues Governor Hogan’s Commitment to Eliminate Structurally Deficient Bridges, Improve Infrastructure Statewide

(March 20, 2017) – This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $3.5 million project to replace the bridge deck on eastbound US 40 over the ramp from westbound US 40 to westbound I-70 in Frederick County.  The project should be complete summer 2017, weather permitting.

The lane which carries eastbound US 40 over the ramp will be closed and traffic will be redirected.  SHA will shift westbound US 40 traffic to the shoulder, allowing eastbound and westbound traffic to share the westbound roadway.  In addition, a temporary traffic signal will be placed at the US 40/Kehne Road intersection, allowing access to US 40.

The bridge is safe, but the bridge deck (driving surface) has outlived its useful life and must be replaced.  This project will eliminate another bridge from SHA’s 69 structurally deficient bridges.

Crews will work Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Approximately 7,800 vehicles use this area daily so motorists should plan extra travel time.  SHA’s contractor for the bridge replacement is Anchor Construction Corporation of Washington, D.C.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver need to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
