Motorists Can Expect Nighttime Double Lane Closures on the Bridge

(April 18, 2017) – Tonight, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) is starting a project to apply a protective pavement sealant to the I-95 bridges over the Patapsco River at the Baltimore/Howard County line.  Crews will begin the preventative maintenance project on the southbound I-95 Bridge and move to the northbound bridge in May.  Weather permitting, the $250,000 project will be complete mid-summer.

The sealant is applied to the bridge deck (driving surface) and fills small cracks and minor pavement damage and extends the life of the bridge deck by approximately 10 years.  SHA’s contractor, PDI Sheetz of Linthicum, is permitted to close one lane at 7 p.m. and two lanes at 8 p.m. Sundays through Friday mornings.  All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. each day.

Crews will use arrow boards, cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.  Nearly 179,000 motorists use this section of I-95 each day, but traffic volumes are significantly less at night.  Motorists should plan extra commuting time during construction and consider using MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway), US 1 (Washington Boulevard) and US 29 to MD 100 and back to I-95 as alternate routes.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver need to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
