Driving Surface to Be Replaced from 48th Street to Riverdale Road

(April 24, 2017) – Final resurfacing is underway on the $24 million pedestrian and bicycle safety project on a two-mile section of MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) between 48th Street and Riverdale Road in Bladensburg/Edmonston, Prince George’s County. Weather and progress permitting, all paving should be complete by the end of summer.

To date, Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) contractor crews have completed construction or installation of drainage and sewer infrastructure, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalks, sidewalk ramps and driveways; roadway medians, curb and gutter, inlets and guardrail. Concrete bus pads for bus shelters have been installed at five locations within the project limits.  The concrete bus pads help preserve pavement from heavier vehicles.

Crews have substantially completed work on a new pedestrian/bicyclist path on MD 201 between Edmonston Road and Riverdale Road with new traffic and pedestrian signals at five locations within the limits.

To complete roadway resurfacing, crews will remove the top layer of asphalt, apply new asphalt and apply new pavement markings on MD 201 as well as small sections of roads that tie into   MD 201 including MD 769B (Edmonston Road), MD 768C (48th Street) and Tilden Road, a distance of more than two miles. Crews are permitted to temporarily close a single lane in both directions on all roads:

• Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and

• Overnight, Sunday through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Additional lane closures and work times may be necessary to expedite the project. Equipment used for construction may be disruptive. SHA’s contractor for the work is Rustler Construction, Inc. of Upper Marlboro.  Approximately 36,200 motorists use this section of MD 201 each day so motorists are encouraged to plan on extra travel time during construction.

Citizens with questions regarding the project can contact Mr. Glenn Chase, SHA Project Engineer, at 240-876-6869 or Mr. Bill Kurcharek, SHA District 3 Area Engineer, at 301-513-7329.  For real-time traffic information, please visit www.md511.org or call 1-855-466-3511 using a hands-free device while driving.
