Project Will Improve Pedestrian Access in Friendsville, Grantsville and Accident

(March 15, 2018) – Beginning next month, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin upgrading aging sidewalk and ramps in Friendsville, Grantsville and Accident in Garrett County. The $1.2 million project will be complete mid-summer.

Statewide, MDOT SHA is addressing aging sidewalk to improve pedestrian access using current Americans with Disability Act (ADA) guidelines. Excavating Associates, Inc. of Ellerslie, will work at the following locations:

Friendsville

• MD 742 (First Avenue/Maple Street) within town limits.

Accident

• US 219 (Garrett Highway) between Polk Street and South Street.

Grantsville

• MD 495 (Bittinger Road/South Yoder Street) between Grant Street and Ravine Street;

• MD 669 (Springs Road) between US 40 Alternate (Main Street) and Hemlock Drive; and

• US 40 Alternate between MD 669 and First Street.

Although most of the work will take place on roadway shoulders, there may be occasional single lane closures and reduced on-street parking to accommodate crews and equipment. Work will take place between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

MDOT SHA will resurface the roads in the same project limits in 2019.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
