Motorists Should Expect Delays and Allow Extra Commute Time

(May 3, 2018) - Beginning this Saturday morning, May 5 at 6 a.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will perform bridge work (deck sealing) associated with the $39.6 million interchange construction project on MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) at Randolph Road in Silver Spring, Montgomery County. All traffic lanes will reopen no later than 6 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, May 12 using the same work times.

To perform the work safely, no through traffic will be permitted to travel across the Georgia Avenue/Randolph Road intersection. All traffic will be restricted to right-turns only at all four legs of the intersection under the direction of law enforcement. Motorists should add extra commute time and seek alternate routes such as MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) or MD 586 (Veirs Mill Road) during the work. The interchange project work be in its final configuration by the end of summer.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
