Crews Complete Emergency Repairs After Washout

(May 31, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has reopened MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) between MD 79 (Petersville Road) and MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) in Frederick County following a May 16 washout.

This emergency repair was completed seven weeks ahead of the estimated two-month repair. MDOT SHA’s contractor, PDI Sheetz Construction, Inc. of Linthicum, repaired washed out roadside slopes, installed stabilization rocks, rebuilt the bridge approaches, paved and restriped MD 180 at the damaged area. The MD 180 Bridge over Little Catoctin Creek was not affected by the storm. The estimated cost of the repair is $300,000.

“MDOT SHA crews, consultants and contractors worked hard to deliver this massive repair to our customers weeks ahead of our initial estimations,” said MDOT SHA District Engineer John Concannon. “This is a testament of professional collaboration between stakeholders to achieve an efficient and successful solution to a challenging problem.”
