Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration Features Look Up Look Out Pedestrian Safety Campaign at National Night Out events in Baltimore County

(August 7, 2018) – Join the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Tuesday, August 7, 2018 for National Night Out. Stop by the MDOT SHA tables to learn about the Look Up Look Out pedestrian safety campaign and pick up valuable safety information at the Chartley Park Shopping Center along MD 140 (Main Street) in Baltimore County.

As back-to-school time and fall’s shorter days draw near, it is the perfect time to remind Marylanders the role both drivers and walkers play in pedestrian safety.  Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable at night, when visibility is decreased.  Those walking are urged to “see and be seen,” as part of MDOT SHA’s Look Up Look Out pedestrian safety campaign by wearing light or reflective clothing.  At the same time, drivers are urged to keep eyes on the road and look out for pedestrians.

National Night Out is an annual event to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. The National Association of Town Watch hosted the first National Night Out events in 1984. Today, more than 16,000 communities across the nation celebrate with block parties, festivals and various events to promote safety.

MDOT SHA’s Look Up Look Out pedestrian safety efforts remind both drivers and pedestrians of the rules of the road, the need to stay alert and avoid distractions and look out for each other. Pedestrian safety is an issue that affects the entire community. On average more than 100 pedestrians are killed each year in Maryland.  Grassroots community events such as National Night Out provides MDOT SHA the opportunity to engage customers, provide safety information and receive community input for future outreach efforts.
