Motorists Can Expect Single and Double Lane Closures Overnight Through the End of November

(October 31, 2018) - Beginning 10 p.m. tonight, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin final paving and striping the MD 97 (Georgia Avenue)/MD 28 (Norbeck Road) intersection. The work is part of the $3 million intersection improvement project that added a left and right turn lane to improve safety and intersection operations. MDOT SHA is taking advantage of a window of favorable weather to bring the project to completion.

Motorists can expect single and double lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., with the exception of tonight and election night when crews will begin at 10 p.m. MDOT SHA will continue the nighttime lane closures Sunday nights through Friday mornings until late November, which will be the completion of the project.

Although traffic volumes are significantly lower at night, drivers should plan extra commuting time during paving operations as this intersection is a major gateway to Rockville and Gaithersburg. Approximately 50,000 vehicles per day use this intersection.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.  For a list of all major MDOT SHA projects, click on Road Ready, MDOT SHA's electronic construction brochure.
