Game Day Traffic on Top of Rush Hour Traffic to Cause Significant Delays

(September 26, 2019) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is urging motorists to adjust their afternoon commute times on Friday, September 27. Major traffic congestion is anticipated in the College Park area for the University of Maryland football game with Pennsylvania State University (Penn State).

MDOT SHA will adjust traffic signal timing on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between Campus Drive and I-495/I-95 (Capital Beltway) and along MD 193 (Greenbelt Road) between Metzerott Road and Adelphi Road beginning at 12 noon to accommodate the early university dismissal. MDOT SHA will closely monitor and adjust traffic signal timing on state routes in and around the University of Maryland throughout the day and evening. MDOT SHA will add additional patrols to the area to provide rapid assistance in the event of a crash or disabled vehicle.

MDOT SHA recommends that people planning on attending the game use transit or to provide plenty of additional drive time.

Drivers are urged to remain extra vigilant for pedestrian and bicyclists in the area. Pedestrians are urged to Look Up and Look Out. Walk Smart College Park.
