Daytime Work Will Close Section of MD 851 in Sykesville
(October 20, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will conduct an underground survey of MD 851 (Springfield Avenue) between Spout Hill Road and Central Avenue in Sykesville, Carroll County. This work requires lane closures to allow crews to survey the travel lanes.
Starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, October 24, MDOT SHA will have single lane closures on this section of MD 851 for all three work days – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
During the morning of Wednesday, October 26, both travel lanes will be closed between Cedar Avenue and just east of Walnut Avenue from 9 a.m. to noon. The detour directs motorists to take Spout Hill Road to First Avenue to Central Avenue and back to MD 851.
The survey will use ground-penetrating radar to identify underground rock as part of a drainage system upgrade project on MD 851 scheduled to start in spring 2023. The survey will take three days to complete. The schedule is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with work ending on Wednesday, October 26.

The Move Over Law in Maryland requires motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals.
