(June 16, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is upgrading sidewalks along MD 343 (Washington Street) in Cambridge between Pine Street and Leonard Lane.   Work includes upgrading existing sidewalks to current ADA standards, replacing curb and gutter, restriping travel lanes and new crosswalk striping.  This section of MD 343 will be resurfaced under a separate contract once the current work is completed.

Motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and residents along Washington Street should expect occasional single-lane closures during daytime hours.  A flagging operation will be in place to safely guide motorists and cyclists through the work zone.  SHA urges motorists to exercise caution through the work zone – slow down watch for bicyclists who frequently travel this stretch of Washington Street.  Crews will work in front of homes at various times therefore pedestrians should follow any posted sidewalk detours.

The upgrades are part of a $2.7 million areawide contract awarded to Image Asphalt Maintenance of Pasadena for sidewalk, curb and gutter upgrades at various locations in Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties.

Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.  While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
