(June 17, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will repair sections of northbound MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) this weekend starting tonight at 9 p.m., weather permitting.  To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, SHA will close the right lane of northbound MD 295 through the existing work zone between I-195 and I-695 (Baltimore Beltway).  Work includes full-depth concrete and asphalt patching, which requires crews to allow concrete to settle over a 24-48 hour period.  All work should be complete no later than 5 a.m. Monday, June 20.

The lane drop will begin prior to the airport exit.  While all ramps to and from MD 295 will remain open, motorists leaving Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Airport) using I-195 West to MD 295 North will be merging into one lane of traffic without an acceleration lane.  These motorists are reminded to be patient under a Yield condition and stop if necessary before proceeding into traffic. To avoid delays, motorists should take I-195 to the exit for the Airport Loop (MD 170 to MD 176) then to I-97 North to reach points north.

This work is part of a $12.5 million widening of MD 295 from I-195 to I-695.  SHA is adding a third lane in each direction, resurfacing MD 295 in the work zone (including the southbound ramp to I-195 east/BWI Airport) and installing post-and-cable guardrail and median landscaping.  SHA’s general contractor is P. Flanigan & Sons of Baltimore.

SHA reminds motorists to plan ahead and check travel conditions including live traffic cameras and lane closure updates at www.chart.maryland.gov.  Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.  While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
