(January 17, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close and detour a section of MD 7 (Philadelphia Road) between Mayflower Road and Hospital Drive in eastern Baltimore County beginning 9 p.m. Friday, January 18 for weekend underground drainage pipe work.  Crews will excavate and replace two major drainage pipes located underneath and across the two-lane section of MD 7.

Beginning 9 p.m. Friday, January 18:

Eastbound/northbound MD 7 (towards Harford County) will be closed to through traffic at Mayflower Road.  SHA will direct traffic to Rossville Boulevard to Franklin Square Boulevard to Hospital Drive and back to eastbound MD 7.

Westbound/southbound MD 7 (towards Baltimore City) will be closed to through traffic south of Hospital Drive.  The posted detour will be Hospital Drive to Franklin Square Boulevard to Rossville Boulevard and back to westbound MD 7.

SHA encourages all motorists traveling to CCBC-Essex, Franklin Square Hospital and other institutions, businesses and communities in the area to plan ahead for extra travel time this weekend.  Local residents/business owners with driveways on MD 7 within the work area will be permitted to enter and leave their driveways.

Truck drivers traveling between Baltimore County and Harford County may wish to use alternative routes to MD 7, such as US 40 (Pulaski Highway) or I-95 (John F. Kennedy Memorial Expressway)

The intersection will re-open to traffic on or before 5 a.m. Monday, January 21.  In case of inclement weather next week, the road closure will take place on the weekend of January 25 – 28, with the same detour route in effect.

The underground drainage pipe work is part of SHA’s $1.5 million project to improve safety and operations at the MD 7/Hospital Drive intersection.   The project includes intersection widening to provide a new left turn lane from eastbound MD 7 to Hospital Drive; installation of a new traffic signal and removal of the existing flashing beacon at the intersection; highway drainage system reconstruction; pavement resurfacing and marking, retaining wall construction; stormwater management improvements and landscaping.

SHA’s contractor for the project is Concrete General, Inc of Gaithersburg.  The entire intersection project will be complete late summer 2013, weather permitting.
