Utility Work Requires Road Closure and Detour

(November 10, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) must temporarily close a section of MD 198 (Laurel-Fort Meade Road) at Bald Eagle Drive in Anne Arundel County on Wednesday night, November 16 at 10 p.m. The temporary closure and detour is needed for utility work.  Weather permitting, crews will open all lanes by 7 a.m. Thursday, November 17.

During work, utility contractors will use a crane to pull cables from one side of MD 198 to the other, as well as place new cables into new conduits.  This work is part of area utility upgrades.

Residents and businesses will have access to their properties while the utility work is being completed.  Motorists are encouraged to plan extra travel time if planning to use MD 198 in Fort Meade during the work.

SHA will assist utility crews by guiding motorists around the work area using MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) and MD 32.  To avoid the work area, drivers will be directed to use the following detour:

• Motorists traveling west on MD 32 will be directed to Exit 10 C (MD 295) south.  Traffic will follow MD 295 south to the MD 198 (Fort Meade / Laurel) Exit.

• Motorists traveling east on MD 198 will be directed on MD 295 north.  Traffic will follow MD 295 north to the MD 32 Columbia / Fort Meade exit.

Drivers should plan extra commuting time during construction and slowdown in the work zone.  To get the latest travel information in real-time, log onto www.md511.org.  Those who have questions may contact the SHA District 5 Office in Annapolis at 410-841-1000.
