Through May, Crews Will Work Overnight to Repair Cracks and Install New Driving Surface on Busy Stretch of Eastbound I-70
(April 11, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin making roadway improvements on a quarter-mile stretch of eastbound I-70 between the southbound I-270 overpass and New Design Road in Frederick County this weekend. The project is expected to be complete in early May, weather permitting.
Starting at 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, crews will close the right lane of eastbound I-70 for the work. Crews will work overnight, Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., to repair roadway cracks and install a new driving surface.
When work on the right lane of eastbound I-70 is finished, crews will switch to the left lane. The left lane work includes the closure of the on-ramp from southbound I-270. Motorists will be detoured to MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) to access I-70.
The contractor, Francis O. Day Company of Frederick, will use electronic message boards, signs, barrels and cones to alert motorists about the lane closures and work zones. This stretch of eastbound I-70 sees an average of 104,000 vehicles every day.
