Truck Weigh & Inspection Operations
The Motor Carrier Division (MCD), in cooperation with the Maryland State Police (MSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED), the Maryland Transportation Authority Police (MdTAP) Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit (CVSU) and allied law enforcement agencies certified to enforce motor carrier law is responsible for the safe movement of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) along Maryland highways. The MSP and MdTAP operate 13 TWIS with permanent scales and four additional stations that utilize portable scales to check CMV's for compliance with State and federal safety, as well as size and weight requirements. Seven sites utilize weigh-in-motion (WIM) devices to pre-screen for weight violations. Additional electronic screening for CMV credentialing (e.g. fuel tax and safety rating) is being deployed for increased efficiency and effectiveness in maintaining CMV safety.

Gross Weight of Vehicles
Based upon Maryland statistical data, 1.8 million trucks and commercial vehicles are weighed, and 95,000 vehicles are inspected each year. Overweight vehicles, in addition to being a potential safety hazard to highway traffic, strain existing pavement and the design life expectancy of roads and bridges. To minimize damage by excessively heavy vehicles, Maryland adopted the federal bridge formula and table, commonly known as the “Bridge Table,” which is detailed on page 102 in the
Maryland Motor Carrier Handbook (PDF, 946Kb). Maryland utilizes platform scales and WIM equipment at its TWIS, and portable scales at pull-off locations and other sites.
Width of Vehicles
The maximum allowable vehicle width in Maryland is 102 inches, except when prohibited by posted signs. The width of a vehicle includes any load that it carries, exclusive of safety and energy conservation devices, such as side mirrors, turn signal lamps, marker lamps, steps and handholds for entry and egress. Height of Vehicles and Loads
The vehicle and load height limit in Maryland is 13’ 6”. Length of Vehicles and Loads
The length of a vehicle includes its front and rear bumpers and any part of its load that extends beyond the vehicle, but is exclusive of non-load bearing safety and energy conservation devices, such as marker lamps, steps and handhold for entry and egress, front-mounted refrigeration units, and front-mounted air compressors. Refer to the Maryland Vehicle Law Title 24, subsection 104.1 for a list of the different vehicle length limits in Maryland.
