“The program helped me decide what kind of engineer I wanted to be at a time when the number of options seemed overwhelming. I had the opportunity to work directly with experienced engineers who gave me confidence in the skills I had, while also encouraging me to develop new skills that I didn’t know were so important to engineering.”

“My SHA construction internship allowed me to put classroom principles and theories into practice.  I learned to read plans, conduct inspections, and gained a real-world field level perspective of how engineering design decisions impact construction.  The internship set me up for success on my current career path.  ”

“The program allowed me to take classroom theory and apply it to the real world. Being an Intern enhanced my learning curve, as a college curriculum can only expose you to so much. The program provided me an opportunity to develop soft skills that have been indispensable in my career. A couple of my supervisors from the program back then, still serve as my informal mentors today."

“My internship with MDOT SHA provided me a valuable insight into the world of engineering and public service. The experiences I had really made me excited about transportation engineering and showed me that I was focusing on the right career path. So much of what I do every day I learned from my internship and the engineers that I was able to interact with.”

Internship Programs

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Transportation Internship Program (TI) and the Administration Internship Program (AI) expose college students to careers in the state highway sector within Maryland’s integrative transportation system. Interns are placed in full-time assignments in an MDOT SHA office, mentored by senior-level engineers, higher-level technicians, team leaders and colleagues.  With the knowledge gained at their placements, and through shadowing, training, networking and hands on experience, interns make the real world/education connection.
