Next Phase includes Traffic Split, Barrier Installation on US 40 Bridges over Big Gunpowder Falls
(November 3, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is advancing work on its $26.4 million project to rehabilitate the four bridges carrying eastbound and westbound US 40 (Pulaski Highway) over Big Gunpowder Falls and Little Gunpowder Falls in Baltimore and Harford counties.
On the nights of Sunday and Monday, November 7-8, crews are scheduled to install concrete barriers and reflective barriers in the bridge work zone on eastbound and westbound US 40 over the Big Gunpowder Falls bridges. This will create a temporary work zone in the center of the bridges, with a split traffic pattern and travel lanes on each side of the bridges. The temporary split traffic pattern will be in effect until early spring 2022. The temporary traffic patterns on the bridges will not impede crossovers nor driveways along this section of US 40.
Once the new traffic pattern is in effect, there will be two lanes open in each direction on the US 40 bridges over Big Gunpowder Falls during weekday peak travel hours. Motorists should expect temporary single-lane closures on eastbound and westbound US 40 during the following times:
- Daytime, Mondays through Saturdays - westbound from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and eastbound from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Overnight, Sundays through Thursdays - westbound and eastbound from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day.
MDOT SHA’s contractor, Allan Myers – MD Inc. of Fallston, will use electronic signs, cones and barrels to alert motorists and pedestrians of the work zone and new traffic patterns in the work zone. Motorists should plan for extra travel time on this section of US 40 and look ahead for temporary lane closures and changing traffic conditions during bridge work. The four-bridge rehabilitation project will continue through late summer 2022, weather permitting.
