$5.2 Million Project will Upgrade Facilities at Station Originally Built in 1955
(December 16, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning construction on a $5.2 million project to upgrade and modernize the US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station in Delmar, north of Salisbury in Wicomico County. Construction on the facility, located on US 13 between Mallard Drive and Winner Boulevard, is expected to begin this month and be completed by next summer, weather permitting.
There are no plans to enlarge the weigh station property footprint as part of this modernization. All improvements are designed to fit within the existing right-of-way.
Upgrades at the scale facility will include new truck height detectors and an LED signal display, as well as replacement of the current scale with a modern deep pit scale and computer system. Other facility improvements include:
- additional parking for inspections,
- upgraded traffic barriers, lighting, and closed-circuit cameras,
- improved signage,
- installation of eyewash stations for safety,
- refurbished entrance gates and
- replacement of existing office trailers with new modular buildings for inspections on both northbound and southbound sides.
Harkins Contracting Inc., of Salisbury, is the primary contractor performing the construction work. The US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station is one of two remaining scale houses constructed in 1955. It has been operated by the Maryland State Police since 1967. The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
