(February 19, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin repairs to the eastbound I-70 bridge over MD 27 (Ridge Rd) in Mount Airy, Carroll County next week. The bridge over northbound MD 27 was damaged last fall when it was hit by a truck, resulting in the need to close the southbound MD 27 ramp onto eastbound I-70. The project is expected to be completed this spring, weather permitting.

The restoration will begin with the removal of the side barrier, the bridge deck, and the steel beams in the damaged areas of the span over northbound MD 27 followed by the installation of new structural elements. The work will take place during daytime hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Monday through Friday, northbound MD 27 will have a single-lane closure.

The schedule includes three weekends of work in March, weather permitting, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday and ending by 5 a.m. the following Monday. Northbound MD 27 will close during weekend work hours. Motorists will be detoured to eastbound I-70 and use the MD 94 (Woodbine Road) exit to return on westbound I-70 to continue travelling on northbound MD 27. We will announce the specific weekend dates later this month.

The State Highway Administration will use automated speed enforcement (ASE) devices on eastbound I-70 and MD 27 using the current speed limits (70 miles per hour on I-70 and 50 mph on MD 27) to enhance safety for workers and motorists.

The State Highway Administration understands that roadwork can be an inconvenience; however, the work is necessary to ensure a safe and reliable highway network. Drivers are asked to slow down, be patient, allow extra travel time, stay alert and move over when approaching a work zone.
