(May 5, 2011) -- This Saturday, May 7, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close Notley Road between Royal Forest Lane and Paula Lynn Drive from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to allow crews to complete paving for completion of the permanent bridge.  Traffic will then be shifted onto the permanent bridge over the Intercounty Connector (ICC).

Advance signage will alert motorists of the temporary closure and provide alternate routes.  Access to Royal Forest Lane and Paula Lynn Drive from Notley Road will be maintained.

Subsequent work to completely remove the detour roadway and pour permanent curb and sidewalk along the northbound lane of Notley Road will be conducted under flagging operations later this spring and summer.

Notley Road is located within the boundaries of the ICC’s Contract B, which extends from just east of Georgia Avenue/MD 97 to just west of US 29.  As of May 1, Contract B is approximately 75 percent complete.

This construction season, there will be numerous active work zone sites as SHA crews improve roads around the state.  These projects range from paving, bridge rehabilitation and regular maintenance and include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.  While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Over the past 10 years in Maryland, work zone crashes averaged 2,646 each year, injuring more than 1,400 and killing 12 people. Nationally, more than 700 people are killed each year in work zone crashes – the majority of them motorists. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
