(July 2, 2012) – Beginning Monday, July 9 the State Highway Administration (SHA) will implement the second of three street closures for motorists along two sections of Isabella Street in Salisbury. The closures, which will continue through early August, will allow crews to improve drainage in the Newtown Neighborhood.

Isabella Street, which has been closed since June 18 between Lake and Mill Streets, will temporarily open to traffic June 30 through July 9.  However it will close again for one more week, 24 hours per day from Monday, July 9, through Friday, July 16.  This second street closure will allow the contractor to install an additional manhole for drainage on Isabella Street between Lake and Mill Streets.

A temporary detour will be in place for the five-day street closure.  Motorists traveling west on East Isabella Street will turn south and proceed on Mill Street to US 50 Business (Salisbury Parkway).   Motorists traveling east on East Isabella Street will turn south on to Lake Street and proceed to US 50 Business.

A third detour on Isabella Street will require closing the intersection of West Isabella Street and Mill Street for three weeks from Monday, July 16, through Friday, August 3.  This closure will allow the contractor to install a 61-foot drainage pipe under the railroad track crossing at Mill Street.

During this third street closure a detour will be in place directing eastbound traffic on West Isabella Street to turn south on Lake Street, continue eastbound on US 50 to North Division Street, then back to East Isabella Street.  Westbound traffic will be detoured in the reverse direction.  Crews will use barricades, variable message signs, warning signs and barrels to direct traffic through both detour routes.

Throughout the three-week street closure access to residents and businesses on Isabella Street will remain open.  Motor vehicle access to residents and businesses located on West Isabella Street, west of the railroad tracks at Mill Street, will travel from Lake Street and West Isabella Street. Motor vehicle access to residences located on West Isabella Street, east of the railroad tracks at Mill Street, will travel from North Division Street and West Isabella Street. Access to businesses located on Mill Street will be available at all times to motorists traveling from US 50.

Once SHA installs the new drainage pipes along West Isabella Street, Park Avenue and William Street, the stormwater improvements will continue for about 18 months along both sides of US 13 Business to north of London Avenue.  SHA is working with the City of Salisbury to ensure there is minimal disruption of public utilities to property owners.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.
