(November 15, 2012) –The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close lanes this weekend along eastbound MD 193 (University Boulevard) between 58th Avenue and 60th Avenue in Greenbelt for concrete bus pad construction.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, November 16 (weather permitting), SHA will close the far two right lanes on eastbound MD 193. All lanes will be open to traffic no later than 12 noon on Sunday, November 18.

Work crews will cut and remove the old sections, then pour concrete for new bus pads (road surface located directly in front of a bus stop that is strong enough to carry heavier vehicles without damaging the roadway). The bus pad reconstruction is part of a $4.5 million safety and resurfacing project on MD 193 in Greenbelt in Prince George’s County.

Crews will perform different phases of the bus pad construction. Although crews may not always be present, lanes must remain closed until the bus pad concrete is fully cured and all affected lanes are declared safe for travel. SHA will use construction barrels, construction cones, arrow boards and flaggers to guide motorists through the work zone. Approximately 46,000 vehicles travel along the busy University Boulevard corridor in Greenbelt daily, so motorists should plan for extra commute time and use alternate routes to avoid construction delays.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
