(April 26, 2013) – Motorists can expect 24/7 single lane closures on the Salisbury Bypass from now to Memorial Day. The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) begins the second phase of slope renovations along the US 50 Bypass from US 13 to Northwood Drive, on Monday, April 29.  The restoration work along the bypass is expected to be complete before Memorial Day, weather permitting.

The single lane closures will be in place in each direction along US 50 between the US 13 overpass to west of Northwood drive.  The temporary lane closures and reduced lane width on the US 50 Bypass will be in place at both work zones until the renovations are completed.

The round-the-clock lane closures are necessary because SHA will use temporary concrete barriers adjacent to the work zones to protect motorists and workers on the bypass. In addition, variable message signs, cones and barrels will direct traffic through both work zones during the slope renovation work.

The project begins with the repair of slopes adjacent to the eastbound lane of the US 50 Bypass, just west of Northwood Drive.  During this work the right lane and shoulder of eastbound US 50 will be closed to traffic while the left lane will remain open.

The work then moves to the westbound side of the bypass starting at the US 13 overpass for slope renovations adjacent to the ramp from Northwood Drive.  The right lane and shoulder of westbound US 50 will be closed to traffic while the left lane will remain open. All entrance and exit ramps on the US 50 Bypass will remain open to motorists throughout the slope renovations.

The $300,000 project was awarded to David A. Bramble, Inc., of Chestertown.

SHA will rebuild and re-stabilize the slopes and install curb and gutter with underground drains to channel storm water to concrete inlets.  The velocity of the water will be slowed as a result of filtering the water through stone rock piles into existing storm water drainage along the highway. Ultimately, the storm water will drain into existing stormwater management ponds along the highway.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer driving. Safer work zones. Benefit everyone!
