(March 17, 2014) – Snowfall is expected to taper off throughout the day as road crews continue to clear lanes and salt pavements.  The State Highway Administration (SHA) will monitor conditions and respond as additional bands of snow are expected later this afternoon, possibly creating one to two more inches of snow.

As temperatures drop, wet pavements can become slick and icy so caution is still advised for travelers.  Drivers are reminded to keep speeds down and be alert to changing conditions both on the road and from temperatures in the air. Motorists are not the only ones venturing out, so please be mindful of pedestrians, some of whom may walk in the road to avoid sidewalks that are not shoveled.

There are few important tips to keep in mind: See and be seen by clearing off your vehicle before setting out; not only do you want to clear head lamps and windows, but clear snow from the entire vehicle. Ice and snow blowing off vehicles can be dangerous to other drivers sharing the road. If your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should also be on – that’s Maryland law.  Be sure to use caution and reduce speeds, remain alert, buckle up and drive sober / designate a sober driver.

As the snow melts and storm cleanup continues, drivers should also remain alert for fallen tree branches and standing water, use caution when turning at intersections and be mindful of pedestrians.

Local jurisdictions are also continuing storm cleanup operations, therefore many sidewalks are not clear and pedestrians may be walking in travel lanes. Click here to submit service requests for issues along State numbered routes. SHA invites customers to follow the social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook.  Check traffic on live traffic cameras on CHART at www.roads.maryland.gov and check MD511 for travel information along your route.
